1. Midsommar 5☆

Folk horror at its disturbing, mesmerising best. Unlike anything else you will see this year.

2. The Irishman 5☆

Operatic in scale and ambition, both technically and in terms of story, this is a welcome return to the genre for many involved, and the most measured, mature gangster effort from Scorsese to date.

3. Pain and Glory 5☆

A hint of personal autobiography from Almodovar, this is a beautiful film, with a career best turn from Antonio Banderas as a respected film Director, struggling to cope with issues of his health, his art, and his own legacy. Engrossing throughout.

4. Marriage Story 5☆

The most recent addition to this list, from the incredible, devestatingly real script to the awards certainty performances, it captivates completely, and draws laughter and tears along the way.

5. Joker 5☆

The most controversial film of the year. Todd Phillips and Joaquin Phoenix deliver a gritty take on the making of a comic book legend. More 70's Scorsese, less 90's Schumacher, it's a risky introverted explosion of character and it really really works, if you let it breathe.

6. Once Upon a Time in Hollywood 5☆

More heart than usual, but still plenty of classic Tarantino for fans to lap up, in his 1969 Hollywood love letter. The whole film looks kissed by a golden era lens, and it sure is a good bit of fun with a twist.

7. Avengers: Endgame 5☆

Thanos, thick Thor, portals, the lot! Hard to serve so many characters in so little time, although the series has had plenty of time to establish how it's done. This is the benchmark for such films.

8. Spiderman: Into the Spiderverse 5☆

The unexpected superhero stand-out of the year, this animated effort gets everything right. From tone, humour, imagination, right through to...Nicholas Cage. Brilliant film.

9. Knives Out 5☆

Proving that the whodunnit doesn't have to be a stuffy, old fashioned cliche, this is up there with the most fun you'll have at the cinema all year. Not quite a comedy, more a wacky mystery with a style of its own.

10. Ad Astra 5☆

Brad Pitt is on restrained form as the son of a space dwelling legend in this eerie, atmospheric, thriller. Take your time settling in, and it's a strange, dreamy, at times Kubrickian experience.

11. Rocketman 5☆
12. Fighting with my Family 5☆
13. Mid 90's 4☆
14. Doctor Sleep 4☆
15. Us 4☆
16. Booksmart 4☆
17. Ford v Ferrari 4☆
18. Ready or Not 4☆
19. Green Book 4☆
20. Vice 4☆
